About the Expert
A Lifetime Dedicated to Czech Mountain Trails
The Academic Foundation
Tomáš started his career in the field—literally. After earning his master's degree in Nature Conservation from Charles University in Prague, he joined the Czech Academy of Sciences' Institute of Botany in Průhonice. For five years, he focused on how alpine plants adapt to extreme conditions in the Krkonošské Mountains. It wasn't just desk research. He was out in all weather, documenting species behavior across different elevations and microclimates. That groundwork taught him something crucial: understanding the environment means understanding the people who move through it.
Practical Park Management
In 2007, Tomáš moved from pure research to practical management. He spent eight years with the Krkonošský National Park Administration, where he developed trail maintenance protocols and created interpretive programs that actually worked. The difference? He wasn't telling visitors what to do—he was showing them why it mattered. He designed systems that made people want to follow the rules because they understood them. His work bridged the gap between conservation science and visitor experience.
Defining the Blaze System
The breakthrough came in 2012. Tomáš published a comprehensive analysis of the traditional Czech colored blaze system—those painted marks that guide hikers through the mountains. His research wasn't just academic. It showed exactly how the system worked, where it failed, and why some routes confused visitors while others felt intuitive. The Ministry of Environment took notice. His analysis led to consulting work on trail redesign projects across multiple parks, including Šumavský, Podyjí, and České Švýcarsko. He didn't just study the trails. He remade them.
Today's Work
Now at Torvallen s.r.o., Tomáš combines his field expertise with digital resources. He's documented over 400 kilometers of marked trails across all four national parks and maintains a personal collection of historical maps dating back to the 1970s. His philosophy is straightforward: well-informed hikers become better stewards of nature. When people understand the zoning rules, the blaze system, and what they're actually walking through, they protect it. That's the real goal.
